The chief medical officer, also known as CMO, was the officer or person in charge of the medical division aboard a starship, starbase, space station or other establishment. His or her chief responsibility was to ensure the well-being and health of all under his or her care, and to ensure all other medical officers or officials under his or her command offered the same. The chief medical officer usually holds a medical doctorate.

On a Starfleet starship, the chief medical officer operated out of sickbay, while on a space station or starbase, this was sometimes known as the infirmary.

In Starfleet (at least), if the CMO felt his or her commanding officer was no longer fit for duty, the chief medical officer had the power to remove the CO from duty under Starfleet Medical Protocol 121 (Section A).
